Families Behind Bars

Kay Dane's book about those imprisoned in foreign jails has been officially launched during an emotion-filled event at Angus and Robertson, Capalba.

Families Behind Bars looks not only at cases of people trapped in appalling conditions in overseas prisons, but also at the effects their incarceration has on their loved ones. There are currently over 200 Australians in foreign prisons.

The June 21 book launch was attended by Federal Member for Bowman, Andrew Laming and Redland Shire Councillor, Peter Dowling.

Kay Dane's heard stories at the event from people who have their own experiences, "One lady shared how she narrowly evaded jail in Thailand, another told me how she's been fighting for justice in her workplace and feels it's all hopeless but felt inspired by what I had been through. Another man confined all his life to a wheel chair said that he got alot out of talking to me and was particularly interested in how I overcame depression. A teenage boy said he is going to read my book because he is thinking of travelling overseas in his gap year and wants to be prepared."

Kay and her husband Kerry were imprisoned for almost a year in communist Laos after being falsely accussed of stealing sapphires from a mine.

Italy? It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the time...

The official Italy? It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time book launch has taken place at Avenue Bookstore, Albert Park.

The story behind  Italy? It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time:

Author, Simon Capp, thought he would combine his dream of living in Italy with the modern world of communication. As a Japanese interpreter all he would need to work was electricity and an internet connection. The Capp Family head off to a remote village in Italy, and find that theory and practice can be very different. Italy? It seemed like a good idea at the time is about their grumpy landlord, battles with Telecom Italia and much more. Despite their trials, the Capps do eventually fall in love with Italy after moving to another village and are faced with the dilemma over whether they will return to Australia.

Author, Richard Shears' latest book, Swamp: Who Murdered Margaret Clement? has been officially launched in the town in which the mystery is based.

Sunday, May 11 saw the Leongathta Bookstore and Tarwin Lower Riverview Hotel host a capacity filled event to celebrate the release of the book and to commemorate one of Australia's enduring mysteries.

Clement was the belle of Melbourne Society until the great Depression changed her life forever. Her home – once overlooking lush pastures on the Tarwin River – ended up in the middle of a swamp, after river levy banks collapsed from lack of maintenance. However Margaret stayed put as the property disintegrated around her. It made her a target of opportunists – and one that would lead to her murder. Over 50 years later, there has still been no official answers as to what happened to Margaret Clements, however, new research in Swamp, could eventually lead to the case being solved.

The launch at Tarwin Lower also involved Richard Shears presenting the Leongatha and District Historical Society with copies of important documents including Margaret Clements will and some of her personal letter.

Swamp: Who Murdered Margaret Clement? is out now through New Holland Publishers.
